ANNOUNCING THE ASIAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

"MUSIC L.A." PROGRAM!

SIPA is proud to offer a beginning course in Pilipino music with a focus on Pilipino choral singing. Through this 8 week course, all students will also receive an introduction to learning how to play the bamboo percussive instrument called the Angklung. This unique workshop will expose students to the rich history of Pilipino music, ranging from the pre-colonial Kulintang, originating in the southern island of Midanao, to the tribal rhythms of Northern Luzon, to the familiar Spanish-influenced rondalla melodies popular throughout the Visayas and all over the Philippine archipelago. No musical experience necessary! All are welcome!

HISTORIC FILIPINOTOWN HEALTH NETWORK:  “CULTURE AND HEALTH AMONG FILIPINOS AND FILIPINO AMERICANS IN CENTRAL LOS ANGELES”

The newly-dubbed Historic Filipinotown Health Network (HFHN), invites you to download a copy of “Culture and Health Among Filipinos and Filipino Americans in Central Los Angeles” – the final report written by SEMICS LLC and funded by a generous grant from The California Endowment.  This publication is the result of a 14-month process from October 2006 to December 2007 that shares and analyzes responses from a series of focus groups and over 400 surveys administered to healthcare providers, youth, residents, seniors, and workers in Historic Filipinotown, a neighborhood in the City of Los Angeles.  Key findings in the final report may provide patients, providers, and public policymakers significant insights regarding health and healthcare delivery to the Los Angeles Pilipino American community.  The report focuses on four factors:  Religion, Family Decision Making, Fictive Kinship Networks, and Language.

HFHN is comprised of Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA - fiscal agency), Asian Pacific Health Care Venture (APHCV), Filipino American Service Group, Inc. (FASGI), and Pilipino Workers Center (PWC).  SEMICS, LLC – a private research and evaluation consultancy - helped design the study and facilitate the collaborative efforts of the consortium agencies.  The Network is progressing beyond the good work accomplished in this research project and continues to meet in hopes of addressing other community issues and garnering support for future endeavors.

We hope that you will find the report beneficial to your own work or personal interests and should you have any questions, please feel free to call Peter Corpus, SIPA Director of Development & Communications at (213)382-1819 x104 or email: pcorpus@esipa.org.  Many thanks for your continued interest and support of Historic Filipinotown and Happy 2008!
